Botox, Dermal Fillers and Other Injectable Solutions

Aging causes collagen to break down and decrease facial volume. Several injectable dermal fillers are now available to restore this volume and reverse the signs of aging. These fillers correct mild to moderate facial wrinkles and stimulate your body to deposit new collagen.

New and varied fillers have been introduced recently and allow correction in an expanding number of areas. While fillers have been used for quite some time along the nasolabial lines (from nostril to lip corner) and lips, they are now also used in a number of different areas for volumizing.

Fillers are now being used for cheek augmentation, to correct under eye hollowness, camouflage lower face jowls, and reverse aging of the hands.

Fillers are injected in the office and the procedure takes 30-45 minutes depending on the number of areas being treated. Many of these are now formulated with a local anesthetic which allows the procedure to be performed with greater patient comfort and use of a topical numbing cream rather than injected nerve blocks. Minimal bruising and swelling may last for a few days after the procedure, but make up can be worn and routine skin regimen followed. Duration of results is variable depending on the product used, but can range from 6 months to 5 years.

A consultation with a Paces plastic surgeon can determine which areas would respond well to filler treatment and which product would best meet your needs.

Neurotoxins

This procedure relies on injections of botulinum toxin into the muscles of the face that are responsible for squinting and frowning. By rendering these muscles inactive, there will be a softening or in some cases elimination of facial wrinkles. Traditionally, Botox has been used to treat creases along the forehead, between the eyebrows and at the outer corners of the eyes. (“crow’s feet”) More recently, the use of Botox has expanded and it has proven useful to treat lipstick lines, depressions at the outer corners of the mouth and creases along the chin. The procedure is performed in the office with use of a topical anesthetic and takes 10-20 minutes depending on the number of areas being treated. The results take effect about 48 hours after the injection and last between 3-4 months. At that time, the Botox injections can be repeated.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves injecting the small clusters of veins on the legs with a solution that causes them to collapse and fade away. The procedure does not require anesthesia, and newer solutions are not painful upon injection. A typical treatment session lasts 30 minutes. Depending on the number of veins present, more than one treatment session may be necessary. These treatments are usually spaced several weeks apart. The use of compression hose for 1-2 weeks following the treatment is helpful in eliminating the veins.
